A pre-sharing rant

So after months? of my sis-in-law encouraging her readers to post pics, I was going through my one of my photobucket accounts. I used to take more pics. I never put them online anymore. It seems like everytime I find a site I like, I decide it's a spamalicious waste of time (myspace) or not easily interfaced with other sites (photobucket and ravelry, although that's changed). So I just left 'em on my computer, and then slowly stopped taking them. But I'd like to get better at taking pics. That won't happen if I don't take them. I've gotten some good shots, I've been told. However, pretty much any photo with a bridge and some water and black and white will make people think that it's art or whatever. Too many people think they're super fancy because they take a picture of something super fancy. Or it's blurry, accidently, and they act like they're the jackson pollack of photography. No humility, they think everything they crap out is fantastic. But enough about Reed College alumni...

How did I get on this subject? Apparently everything I start discussing today turns into a rant. Ponder this post, if you will, or ignore it. Everything is garbage, there is nothing new under the sun, it's all been done/said/felt before, and we're moving on to the next catastrophe.

whilst i am away

ponder this shit:

why aint this shit in the news blowing up like the crisis it is.

why when i searched for "84 year old alzheimer's police walmart parking lot" did it show a whole lotta nothing from the news category, just a buncha blog post like this one.

SHE'S 84 DAMN YEARS OLD, WITH PROBABLE DEMENTIA AND NOW HAS HAD A HEAD BLEED AFTER A POLICE OFFICER FLIPPED HER TO THE GROUND.

i am tired of this shit happening. if it's a teenager, they blame backtalking. if it's a male, they blame aggressiveness. if it's a female, they're uppity or some other nonsense. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO CALL THEM OUT PUBLICLY FOR RACIST BEHAVIOR?

hell. i didn't become a nurse to save lives just so jerks who can't manage to figure out an ambulatory dementia patient can bust their heads open.

Crazy Times

A lot of it is the banks - the financial planners - the stock brokers - the people we trust with our money.

Some of it has been us.

We have become monsters of consumption, people who believe we need everything our parents had, everything our neighbors have, everything the people on television have.

We've forgotten what it is to be content with our needs met. We've bought in to the idea that we must have MORE. We've bought with credit and sold out our futures to debts we can never repay.

I don't need a damned Kitchen Aid Mixer. I have a mixer that works great despite being made in the same decade I was conceived in. Why did I register for that stuff? I know what I want and it's for people to make it to the wedding if they can - I don't need that crap.

30 Rock. Hilarious, right? You don't think that the GE ovens featured floating in heavenly skies skew you into thinking you need a new gas oven with four or more thick burners? Nevermind the actual commercials. The anti-consumer epic Fight Club? How many of you now shop at Ikea partially because of the movie?

What do we NEED? Where on Maslow's hierarchy of needs is Purchasing Power (or the lack thereof)?

Not under basic needs for sure: food? Nah, I can mix with the mixer I have and it my food comes out tasty and healthy.

The next level up: stability, et cetera. My trusty mixer still works.

Belongingness: maybe. The Kitchen Aide mixer is a ubiquitous appliance. You just have to pick your color to be individual (who still belongs in the in group).

Oh, there it is. Esteem, status. Who doesn't have the Kitchen Aide mixer, especially in the most recent colors? Why are you occasionally driving a late 90s vehicle when you can go into debt for a new hybrid who's cost of manufacture isn't just measured in dollars? Why ride your beat up but functional bicycle when the folks in the hip trendy areas have $3000 custom bikes?

But what about your knowledge, your meaning, your self-awareness? Or back to the last level - what if we redefine status? Or get rid of status?

Why don't we realize again the important things? The joy, the self-esteem, one can get from making something rather than buying something. The pride that comes from the perfect cheesecake? The excitement of a seed YOU planted poking it's seedling head from under the ground? The beauty in a story you've written? Why do we measure worth in money made, or even worse, your ability to own things, or pretend that you own things?

This is all stuff we KNOW, down somewhere in the pit of our stomachs. Stuff we should've known as we were doing it.

Thankfully I had grandparents that taught me the joys of gardening and raising our own food. I have multiple family members who can make things with their hands. But still we get caught up and do things like put a mixer on a wedding registry.

quickie: copyright rant

Alternately titled, Steph's guide to copyright:

You cannot seriously claim copyright for a craft done for decades and decades. Everyone knows you did not come up with the art of quilling, for example. A quick internet search will tell ya that I'm not the only one who reads old craft books.

On the other hand, folks need to give credit for where their ideas come from. Maybe let us know that your kindergarten teacher had you glue googly eyes onto a painted yogurt tub and that's where you got the idea to make halloween spiders. Or that you were inspired by Deltron 3000 and started embroidering robots. Or whatever.

Peace, et cetera.

and vote, plz.

:/

yesterday I woke up, went downstairs, and discovered my favorite premade cereal was gone. i probably wouldn't have noticed, but someone left the empty carcass on the counter, right by where the coffee is.

this morning, i woke up, went downstairs and outside to check on my plant babies. radishes, check. green beans, looks like you survived another night without slug or bird attack. tomato.... tomato? gone. thankfully there are a ton in the FRONT yard. we decided about a week or so ago that someone had to watch the dog when he was outside. not that you could prevent every turn of the head and every snap of the rose bush (what kind of dog likes to bite rosebushes??), but you can prevent SOME damage, and you could tell me when a fucking tomato plant ceased to exist because you'd have seen it if you were flippin' watching the dog.

so i fixed the chickenwire "fence" that josh/andy put up that has been broken the last week or so.

i am tired of finding things broken, and no note or no "hey, steph, i'm sorry but my friend/dog/me ate this/broke this/destroyed this/didn't fix this." not only do i get mad, i get frustrated and feel like i'm fighting a losing battle and feel like my housemates don't care.

i tend to take things like this personally.
